Official Account of 9/11 Flight 77 Contradicted by Government's Own Data
Monday, March 26 2007 02:07 PM PDT

Pilots for 9/11 Truth, an ad-hock international organization of pilots and aviation professionals, petitioned the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) via the Freedom of Information Act to obtain their 2002 report, "Flight Path Study-American Airlines Flight 77", consisting of a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file and Flight Path Animation, allegedly derived from Flight 77's Flight Data Recorder (FDR). The 9/11 Commission relied heavily upon and frequently sited the NTSB Flight Path Study in their Final Report. In August, 2006, members of Pilots for 9/11 Truth received these documents from the NTSB and began a close analysis of the data they contain. After expert review and cross check, Pilots for 9/11 Truth has concluded that the information in these NTSB documents does not support, and in some instances factually contradicts, the official government position that American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon on the morning of September 11, 2001.

  1. Altitude data from the FDR shows the aircraft on a different heading and at least 300 feet too high to have struck the light poles along Highway 37 moments before striking the Pentagon.
  2. The rate of descent data is in direct conflict with the aircraft being able to impact the light poles and be captured in the Dept of Defense "5 Frames" video of an aircraft traveling nearly parallel with the Pentagon lawn.
  3. The FDR record of data stops at least one second prior to official impact time, thus omitting crucial, final moment impact data.
  4. If data trends are continued from the last recorded, the aircraft altitude would have been at least 100 feet too high to have hit the Pentagon, even if it were on the correct path to also hit the light poles.

Pilots for 9/11 Truth takes no position on what actually happened at the Pentagon on 9/11. However, the physical evidence of knocked down light poles, which clearly indicates the flight path of the aircraft that struck the Pentagon within a range of one degree or so, the damage trajectory within the Pentagon, and the FDR data provided by the NTSB, are mutually exclusive. Both sets of information can not be true or correct. Either the FDR data upon which the NTSB Flight Path Study was based is false or there was a second aircraft that impacted the light poles and the Pentagon or the knocked-down light poles were staged or some combination of the above need to be true to reconcile these contradictions. In either case what we have is government released evidence which does not factually support the conclusions drawn by the 9/11 Commission or the commonly held understanding of what happened at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

An excellent lecture, summery and slide presentation by Calum Douglas, an engineering student at Oxford Brookes University and member of was just put up on google video. The presentation is about an hour and a half long and covers the history of how the NTSB Flight Path animation, ".CSV" file and the raw data ".FDR" file were acquired and subsequently came to be decoded. Within the raw ".FDR" file is the "radio altitude" of Flight 77 one second prior to impact. This radio altitude is "absolute" altitude information in that it comes directly from the radar sensors aboard the aircraft receiving its own transmissions reflected from the ground. At time point 38:15 through 39:05 of the video presentation, Mr Duglas states: ". . . (the Flight Data Recorder raw data spread sheet) goes on and on for thousands and thousands of cells. The end is very interesting. Here we've got radio altitude. And the last element, radio altitude, is 273 feet. So, according to this raw data read out, after take off, fight 77 never went below 273 feet. Now, I don't think you need to be an engineer to ask yourself, how something 273 feet above the ground hit a building seventy feet tall after hitting five light polls 40 feet tall. It's not possible. It's not possible."

Pilots for 9/11 Truth is committed to discovering the truth surrounding the events of September 11, 2001. We have contacted both the NTSB and the FBI regarding these and other inconsistencies. To date, they have refused to comment on, correct, refute, retract or offer side-letters that might explain the discrepancies between what they claim are the data extracted from the FDR of AA Flight 77 and the physical evidence which underscores the official story alleging its crash into the Pentagon.

As concerned citizens and professionals in the aviation industry, Pilots for 9/11 Truth asks, why have these discrepancies not been addressed by agencies within the United States Government? Why have they falsely represented their own data to the American people? Pilots for 9/11 Truth takes the position that an official government inquiry into these discrepancies is warranted and long overdue. We call upon Congressman Kucinich and our fellow citizens to call for an immediate investigation into this matter.

American Airlines Flight 77 was a morning flight that routinely flew from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), near Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). On September 11, 2001, Flight 77 was hijacked between 08:51 EDT and 08:54 EDT, as part of the September 11, 2001 attacks.[2] On that day, the American Airlines Boeing 757-223, registered N644AA,[3] was piloted by Captain Charles Burlingame and First Officer Dave Charlebois. Just over an hour and fifteen minutes into the flight, it was crashed into the Pentagon, killing 64 on the plane and 125 in the buildings. It was the third airliner to crash that morning, 50 minutes after the first, and 30 minutes after the second.

The hijackers were reported to have been:

Hani Hanjour (Saudi Arabian)  pilot
Khalid al-Mihdhar (Saudi Arabian)
Majed Moqed (Saudi Arabian)
Nawaf al-Hazmi (Saudi Arabian)
Salem al-Hazmi (Saudi Arabian)

All of the hijackers on American Airlines Flight 77 were CAPPS selectees, which required extra screening of their checked bags. Hani Hanjour, Khalid al-Mihdhar, and Majed Moqed chosen by the CAPPS criteria, while Nawaf al-Hazmi and Salem al-Hazmi were selected because they did not provide adequate identification. They had their checked bags held until they boarded the aircraft. Hani Hanjour, who earned a Commercial Pilot certificate in April 1999, is believed to have piloted the hijacked airplane. The passenger security checkpoint at Dulles International Airport was operated by Argenbright Security, under contract with United Airlines.
The flight was scheduled to depart at 08:10 EDT, but actually departed at 08:20 EDT. The 9/11 Commission estimated that the flight was hijacked between 08:51 EDT and 08:54 EDT, just minutes after the first hijacked plane had struck the World Trade Center in Manhattan at 08:46 EDT. The last normal radio communications from the aircraft to air traffic control occurred at 08:50:51 EDT  The Boeing 757's autopilot destination was set for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, located a short distance from the Pentagon.  Passenger Barbara Olson, who called her husband, Ted Olson, reported that the assailants had box cutters and knives. A plane was detected again by Dulles controllers on radar screens as it approached Washington, turning and descending rapidly. Controllers initially thought this was a fighter plane, due to its high speed and maneuverability.

Flight 77 crashed into the western side of the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. at 09:37:44 EDT,  killing all of its 53 regular passengers, 5 hijackers, and 6 crew. As the aircraft hurtled towards the Pentagon at 530 miles per hour,  it clipped several street lampposts (one of which fell onto a taxi cab, injuring the driver, Lloyd England, ) as passed over Washington Boulevard, approximately 20 feet off the ground.  Its right wing hit a portable generator that provided backup power for the Pentagon and the left engine hit an external steam vault before it slammed into the Pentagon.

The section of the Pentagon, which had recently been renovated at a cost of $250 million, housed the Naval Command Center and other Pentagon offices, as well as some unoccupied offices. The crash and subsequent fire penetrated three outer ring sections of the western side. The outermost ring section was largely destroyed, and a large section collapsed. 125 people in the Pentagon died from the attack.
Flight 77 was the only flight hijacked where a bomb threat was not made. The other three hijacked flights were reported to have one hijacker with a red box strapped around their torso, claiming it to be a bomb

Flight Data Recorders have been switched/faked before, see HERE

Mr. Asseline's claim that the black box had been switched after the crash had no solid proof, but there were doubts on the integrity of the crash investigation because of a one week delay between the time the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Cockpit Data Recorder (CDR) were retrieved from the wreckage and the day they were handed over to investigators. To this date, it is not clear exactly who held the black box for a week and why.
